Driven by continuous advances in artificial intelligence technology and rapid expansion of market demand, China’s humanoid robot industry is embracing unprecedented development opportunities. Relevant forecasts show that China’s humanoid robot market size reached RMB 2.76 billion in 2024, and will hit RMB 75 billion by 2029, accounting for 32.7% of the global total to secure the world’s No.1 position. The market scale is projected to reach RMB 300 billion by 2035.

As a core hub for humanoid robot development, Shanghai has officially launched the country’s first heterogeneous humanoid robot training ground. Sustained innovations and breakthroughs in algorithm optimization, hardware upgrading, simulation platforms and data acquisition have laid a solid foundation for the iterative upgrading and large-scale commercial deployment of China’s humanoid robot industry.

To implement national policies including the Implementation Plan for the "Robot Plus" Application Initiative and the Shanghai Action Plan for Promoting High-quality Development of the Intelligent Terminal Industry (2022-2025), Shanghai will accelerate industrial clustering and high-quality growth of its robotics sector. Riding the trends of intelligence, integration, human-likeness and service-oriented development for robots, the city will cultivate new industrial tracks, adhering to innovation-driven growth, demand-oriented development and fundamental industrial support. Focusing on technological breakthroughs, product iteration and scenario-based implementation, Shanghai will fuel technological innovation, speed up the domestication of robotics core technologies, build a world-class robotics industrial cluster and application ecosystem, and deliver key support for the construction of a modern industrial system in the city.

At present, Zhangjiang Robot Valley in Pudong has gathered more than 30 enterprises covering the full humanoid robot industrial chain. A series of functional innovation platforms have also settled in the valley, including the ABB Robotics Empowerment Center, the Innovation Center of Shanghai Robotics Industry Technology Research Institute, the Bionic Robot Laboratory and the National Industrial Software Innovation Institute. These initiatives aim to further cluster the humanoid robot industry and consolidate the Yangtze River Delta’s leading edge in the global humanoid robot sector.
